2012“Studying is the best way to stop dementia”, says Marie-Hélène de Spiegeleer, 76, a former council manager, who after her retirement studied Chinese history at Ghent University. Today she can speak seven languages, including Mandarin, and leads tours around China, Uzbekistan, Armenia and Canada. Last year she published her first book De Islam in China.

Just published. Dutch master chef Jacob Jan Boerma received us for this photo shoot at Restaurant De Leest in Vaasen. He composed some great looking and even better tasting dishes. Isabel Jonet has driven the Portuguese food-bank Banco Alimentar to be the most successful in Europe. I was impressed by the long queues of volunteers waiting for there turn to recollect, unload and repackage food at the recent Banco Alimentar recollection campaign. The great number of children of all ages participating gave great hope for the future. Reader’s Digest has just named Isabel European of the Year.
